WITHDRAWAL URGED

C. OF E. AND COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

MOVE IN SYDNEY

SYDNEY, May «.

The standing committee of Xh.9 Church of England Diocese of Sydritey has recommended to Synod withdrawal from the Council of Churches.

The reasons are embo«ed in a letter from the Archbishop of Sydney, Dr. Mowll, who expresses the opinion that the Council of Churches did not and could not voice the mind of the Church of England. Individual members of the Church of England serving on the council were not able, a3 such, to speak for the Church of England on moral and religious questions. The Church of England believed that the questions considered by the Council of Churches should be referred to denominational authorities before the council made any public announcement on it.

The council decided to refer the matter to the executive committee for a report..
