FROM THE STUDIO

A POLITICAL BROADCAST

TWO SPEECHES ARRANGED

MR. FORBES AND MR. NASH

In view of the fact that arrange^ ments for the broadcast of the speeches of the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) and the Leader of the Opposition (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) from the House of Representatives last night inadvertently fell through, these two speakers are to talk over the air from the 2YA studio for an hour each tonight on the Primary Products Marketing Bill, which was passed in the House of Representatives early this morning. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) announced this decision last night.

It was previously arranged that the speeches of Mr. Forbes and Mr. Nash should be broadcast from the floor of the House, Mr. Forbes summing up for the Opposition and Mr.- Nash replying to the points raised. The unexpected introduction of an Opposition amendment early yesterday morning, however, upset the plan, and led to the application of the closure yesterday afternoon by the Prime Minister. This action ended the debate, and deprived the Minister of Finance of the right of reply.

Mr. Savage said last night that the Government wished to give full publicity to its proposals, but would not block criticism. Accordingly he had made arrangements for Mr. Forbes and Mr. Nash to speak from the broadcasting studio tonight. -Both speeches would be of an hour's duration and would not be so restricted in scope as in Parliamentary debate. Mr. Forbes would be free to develop any lines of criticism, while Mr. Nash would reply to points raised against the Bill both inside and outside of the House
