WOMAN FOR TRIAL

SERIOUS ALLEGATION

CHRISTCHURCH, May 6.

Ruebena Shirley, a married woman, of 42 Alpha Road, was today committed to the Supreme Court for trial on a charge that on or about March 15 she used an instrument for an illegal purpose or other means with a like intent on Catherine Maria Hill. She pleaded not guilty. Mrs. Hill died at Christchurch Hospital on March 27. Bail was allowed in the sum' of £500, with one surety of £500 or two of £250. The accused is to report to the police on alternate days.

An inquest into *he death of Mrs. Hill, which was heard simultaneously, was adjourned sine die.

Chief-Detective Dunlop, conducting the case for the police, called evidence of a system to show that Shirley had been carrying on business for some time.

Mr. F. D. Sargent, for the accused, objected.

The Magistrate. Mr. F. F. Reid, noted the objection and heard evidence, saying the point could be argued in the higher court.

The Magistrate made an order prohibiting publication of this evidence and the names of the witnesses giving it.
