Port Nicholson Encampment.—Pat. E. Miller, C.P., presided over a failattendance. Accounts were passed for payment, and correspondence was received. Patriarch Tredrea was welcomed back to membership. Two applications were received for membership. Pat. L. J. Cairns was elevated to the Royal Purple Degree. The office of treasurer having been declared vacant, Pat. Binsted was elected to this office. C.P. E. Miller reported losing the crib shield to Pride of Karori Lodge. The following patriarchs were installed by P.C.P. Wm. Jarvis: — Treasurer, Pat. E. Binsted; recording scribe, Pat. J. P. Salmond; third watch, Pat. W. Treadrea; fourth watch, Pat. W. Harris; inside sentinel, Pat. L. J. Cairns; first guard of the tent, Pat. J. Kidd. Pat. J. P. Salmond tabled a notice of — otion to rescind the motion passed at the previous .meeting with regard to the alteration of the constitution.
Zealandia Lodge (Newtown). —Bro. J. O. Josling, N.G., presided over a large gathering One member was reported sick. A member of the order was admitted on transfer. Arrangements were made to visit Pride of Karori Lodge at its next meeting. The captains of the lodge's "300" and cribbage teams reported successes in recent shield tournaments. The following officers were installed by the D.D.G.M. (Bro. R. J. Mathers):—Bros. J. O. Josling, J.P.N.G.; R. W. Harvey, N.G.; W Fishenden, V.G.; E. D. Walilis, F.S.; C. C. Blakemore, R.S.; H. J. Reilly, L.S.V.G.; F. Ingham. 1.G.; and F. W. Tredrea, O.G. Committees for the new term were elected, and Bro. C. H. Smith was tendered good wishes on his transfer to Auckland. A vote of welcome was extended to the visitors, and responded to by Bros. G. F. Rudkin, Grand Warden. R. J. Mathers, C. A. Allsop (Washington Lodge, Christchurch), K. Dickson (Waipukurau Lodge), J. Kifid (Southern Cross Lodge), W. H. Barrett (Heretaunga Lodge), E. Winter (Maraenui Lodge), M. J. Rowney (Ngatitoa Lodge), C. W. Taylor (Kupe Lodge), and W. H. Munro (Pride of Karori Lodge). The Grand Warden congratulated the lodge and district on the very creditable membership progress made during 1935, which had materially assisted the Dominion jurisdiction to again record an appreciable membership gain, thus 'practically nullifying the effects of the economic depression. He also announced that, despite comparatively heavy expenditure during the year in sick and funeral benefits and payment of old members' and unemployed members' dues, etc., the funds under the control of the Grand Lod"° had increased by more than £20,000, due largely to better results from investments and dues payments by members generally. He also stated that the actuarial valuation of the society's assets for the preceding [quinquennium recently received had disclosed a very enhanced surplus, which would no doubt enable Grand Lodge at the coming session to adopt further progressive measures for the general benefit of members.
Southern Cross Lodge.—Bro. J. Salmon, N.G., presided over a good attendance, visitors including Bro. A. Hodgson, N.G., and officers of Onslow Lodge, Khandallah. Five .members were reported sick, and accounts totalling £32 9s 6d were passed. Four candidates were initiated. The social committee reported that arrangements had been completed for holding a dance alter the next meeting. It was decided to play the U.F.S. "500" shield match at the first June meeting. Rose of Wellington Rebekah Lodge. —Sister M.*Flaus, N.G,. presided over a large attendance, visitors including the Grand Warden (Bro. G. F. Rudkin). Grand, Chaplain (Bro. F. J. Jones), Bro. P. J. Lee, the Lady- District Deputy Grand Master (Sis. M. Sergent), Sis. A. Were (Christchurch), and officers of Victoria, Esther Rahiri, and Ngaio Rebekah Lodges. One sister was reported sick. Quarterly accounts totalling £24 Is 5d were passed, and general business disposed of. Sis. Sergent, assisted by a full staff, installed the officers for the ensuing term as follows:—Sisters M. Flaus, J.P.N.G.; L. Merrie, N.G.; L. Hooper. V.G.; A. M. Parry, F.S.; A. R. Smith, R.S.; A. Collinsbn, Tr.; A. Fitzgerald, Warden; V. Salmond, Conductor; D. Truscott, Chaplain: N. Collins, R.S.N.G.; M. Crooks, L.S.N.G.; B. Flaus, R.S.V.G.; M. Hitchin, L.S.V.G.; E. Boyd, 1.G.; E. Dearden, 0.G.; and L. H. Hope, musician. On behalf of the lodge P.N.G. certificates were presented to Sisters E. Collins and L. Hope. Responding to a vote of welcome congratulatory addresses were made by Grand Lodge officers and the senior officers of visiting Rebekah lodges, Sisters A. Palmer (Victoria), E. Dearden (Esther), K. Tahiwi, and E. Thompson (Ngaio). Esther Rebekah Lodge (Karori). — Sister G. Joiner, N.G., presided over a good attendance. Several social invitations were accepted. One candidate was nominated, and a member of a sister lodge was elected to associate membership.1 A vote of welcome to visitors was responded to by Sister M. Turner (Victoria Lodge), Sister L. Hooper (Rose of Wellington Lodge), and Bro. W. H. Munro (Pride of Karori Lodge). A sealed number competition held during harmony was won by Sister M. Turner. Ngaio Rebekah Lodge.—Sister F. Thompson, N.G., presided over a large attendance. The following officers were installed by the L.D.D.G.M. (Sister M. Sergent) and staff: —Sisters E. Thompson, J.P.N.G.; G. Kinvig, N.G.; M. Godfrey, V.G.; M. Cody, F.S.; O. Flett, R.S.; E: McGill, Tr.; C. Hosking, Warden; M. Hudson, Conductor; M. Connelly, Chaplain; F. Richards, R.S.N.G.; S. Astwood, L.S.N.G.; E. Norton. R.S.V.G.; D. Bracey, L.S.V.G.; J. Kirkwood, 1.G.;. and J. Hunter, O.G. A vote of welcome to visitors was responded to by the Grand Warden (Bro: G. F. Rudkin) and the L.D.D.G.M. (Sister M. Sergent), who extended congratulations on the progress of the lodge during its first term, and by the senior officers present of Victoria, Esther, Rose of Wellington, and Rahiri Rebekah Lodges. GRAND UNITED ODDFELLOWS. District Lodge.—The district officers .were installed at the last meeting of Loyal William Bain branch by the Worthy Grand Master, Bro. F. Hey, assisted by officers of the committee of management. The N.G. of the branch, Bro. Treadway, presided and received the Grand Master and his officers. Urgent business only was transacted and the chair was then taken by the Grand Master. He congratulated the lodge on acquiring such a fine hall. Bro. Hooper, Deputy Grand Master, Bro. Ponder, Past Grand Master, Bro. Bradstock, Grand Secretary, and Bro. Norton, Grand Trustee, also gave addresses. When the district officers were installed Sister Harnor and Bro. Willcocks acted as conductors. Bro. F. A. Harnor w_as installed as district Master, Bro. S. H. Palmer as Deputy District Master, Bro. B. F. Ryde as District Secretary, Sister J. Ryde as District Treasurer, and Bros. W. Mahoney, E. J. Knight, and Sister Hey as District Trustees. The district officers each expressed their thanks for election. At the conclusion of the installation branch officers were then installed by the District Master, assisted by his officers. Loyal Ryde Branch.—The N.G., Bro. Thomas, presided over a large attendance, Bro. Tingay, P.N.G., supervising. The following were elected to the social committee: Bros. Thomas, Rabbitt, Norton, Ryde, and Hitchins. The lodge now has four ping pong tables and the social committee announce tournaments for the winter months. The meeting was a short one, only urgent business being transacted, the remainder of the evening being devoted to ping pong. Loyal Central Branch.—The branch held its fortnightly meeting recently Sister Hooper, N.G., presiding. Three new members were initiated. The District Master, Bro. Harnor, assisted by his officers, Bro. Palmer, D.D.M., Bro. Rydfi, District Secretary. Sister Ryde, District Treasurer, and Bros. Mahony, Knight, and Sister Hey, District Trustees, installed the branch officers. The District Master presented the recently-elected district officers Bro. Couper was elected delegate to
the annual ball committee, and Bro. Kennedy lo the district sports committee.
MANCHESTER UNITY ODDFELLOWS.
Loyal Petou-e Lodge.—The fortnightly meeting was well attended. The judges were present for the purpose of examining the ritual work of the lodge. Lodge honours were accorded the judges. At the conclusion of the meeting games of bowls were played. Loyal Petone Lodge (Moera Branch) —Bro. Heron presided over a good attendance. Sister Rushton reported on the proposed social at Petone. A discussion ensued on matters pertaining to the social life of the lodge. The sick visitor reported on a sick member and Bro. Rushton reported on the Petone Cricket Club's smoke concert during which he stated that the lodge had finished third in the finals. At the close of the meeting games of ping pong and cards were played Loyal Rose of the Valley Auxiliary Juvenile Lodge.—Sister Audrey Wilson presided over a good attendance Officers were installed for the ensuinE six months and instructed in their duties. The superintendent expressed pleasure at seeing officers and members of the newly-formed lodge all wearing he regalia of the Order. Threi hearty cheers were given for Sister Seddon who had made the collars for the floor members. Sister M. B. Carr presided. There was a good attendance. The Woodwards reported on the sick, and accounts were passed for payment. A motion of sympathy was passed to P.D.CR Bro Hoy and Sister Hoy on their re^ cent bereavement The judges for the ritual competition were extended a hearty welcome, by the C.R. Sisters J-.awton and Tester were elected to represent the court at a dinner to be held at Petone on the occasion oi Court Epuni celebrating its jubilee. .Delegates presented their reports on various meetings. Routine business concluded, the court closed with harmony. SONS OF TEMPERANCE. The annual meeting of the Sons of lemperance Friendly Society was held in Christchurch recently, Bro. G. R Simpson (Wanganui), Most Worthy Patriarch, presiding.. Representatives were present from Wanganui, Wellington, Rangiora, Kaiapoi, and Christchurch.. The M.W. Patriarch made his leport, which was adopted. The annual report and balance-sheet was adopted. The sick and funeral fund fill i* 7 id^ the yanagement fund at ±.384 15s lid, and the representation fund at £100 9s 6d. The election of officers resulted as follows:—M.D. Patriarch, Bro. W. The quinquennial report showed a surplus of funds amounting to £8468, which will be used to increase benefits. A new rule was passed granting immediate Benefits to new male members. The Hope of Sydenham Division was successful in winning the membership shield, with an increase of 12 per cent Excelsior Division being second, with an increase of 9.34 per cent. Bro W Fergie, on behalf of the National Divi?i° n'^ pfesenJed Brow- Noakes with the Order's jewel, in recognition of his services to the Order. Bro. Noakes suitably responded. It was decided to hold the next meeting at Rangiora. ORDER OF RECHABITES. Excelsior Tent.—Sister G. H. Jeffery Chief Ruler, presided over a good attendance. Members of Hope of Wellington Tent's bowling team were present to Plar a match for the Cup. Brother W. G. Carpenter, District Secretary, was ,also present. After tent business had been disposed of a social hour was spent in cards and bowling, the latter resulting in a win for Excelsior Tent. ■" . ..
Kilbiriue Tent.—Brother A. Johnson presided over a moderate attendance. Reports were received from Brother and Sister F.. G. Johnson and from Brother Chadburn. Brother Johnson Junior Superintendent, read the Juvenile balance-sheet and announced a donation towards the Adult Tent's management fund. At the same time he made an urgent appeal for assistance from adult members to attend Juvenile Tent meetings. After the meeting had closed Brother and Sister Hemes took charge of the social hour and an enjoyable time was spent in competitions, etc.
