PETROLIFEROUS GAS

FUMES FROM BORE INN.S.W.

SYDNEY, May 5.

A party of Sydney- business men returned to the city by aeroplane today; from an inspection of a petroliferous gas bore at Grafton racecourse.

The bore was originally put down to 3700 feet for the purpose of locating artesian water, but when the drill broke on hard rock the site was abandoned. Quite recently gas fumes were detected rising from the bore. A., cylinder was placed over the bore and some gas impounded, and when a light was applied a brilliant flame shot many feet into the air. It is estimatedthat the pressure of the gas is about 1500 pounds to the square inch.
