RUGBY LEAGUE
FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY
Mr. V. M. Simpson (chairman) presided at the meeting of the "Wellington Rugby League Board of Control.
In expressing thanks to the City Council for allocating Newtown Park to Rugby League lor the season, the chairman felt that appreciation should be expressed to the Rugby Union and its delegate, Mr. Millard, ior the sporting attitude adopted. "I do not think I am exaggerating when I say that although the chairman of the parks and reserves committee, ,Mr. Burns, who presided at a special conference to discuss the matter with the sporting bodies concerned and also the Director of Parks, and Reserves, were anxious to allot the various grounds as justly as possible, we may not have been fortunate enough to get Newtown Park if Mr. Millard had taken up an uncompromising' attitude in the matter. Mr. Millard showed a tolerant and sporting spirit when one might have expected something different, and his friendly gesture was one which we should not forget. At the conference the Hockey Association's delegate also paid tribute to Mr. Millard for the amicable way in which he assisted the City Council and the bodies concerned to bridge rather a delicate situation. The rivalry of Rugby League and Rugby Union," said Mr. Simpson, "is very often different from what a disinterested person might expect from sporting bodies, and on this occasion I am anxious to pay tribute to Mr. Millard and the Rugby Union for not pressing their opposition to our having the use of the ground for the season."
The transfers of S. T. Atkins from Central to Petone and J. Te Puni from Hutt to Petone were approved.
It was decided to officially open the season on Saturday, the fixtures being as follows: —Senior B: Central v. St. George (Newtown Park), 2 p.m., Mr. Holmes; Hutt v. Petone (Randwick School), 2 p.m.. Mr. Findlay.
Senior A—Central v. St. George (Newtown Park), 3 p.m., Mr. Lyons; Hutt v. Petone (Randwick School), 3 p.m., Mr. Kennerley.
The organiser (Mr. G. A. J. McNeill) reported that there were prospects of a new club being started in one of the suburbs and already considerable support had been promised.
A considerable sum had been spent on the Rugby League's new ground at Petone, and it was reported that >t would be ready for Saturday week.
