TRANSACT MAY BE ABSENT
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
PALMERSTON N., This Day.
There was a fair amount of interesting work at Awapuni yesterday morning and among the horses who were sent along against the watch were those who have been accepted for Egmont. The course was in good order, though slow,, and the' flags were over twenty feet out from the rails. The weather was fine and the conditions were pleasant for all concerned.
Among additional riding engagements fox- Egmont are the following: — C. Thomson, Forest Glow and Huaform; W. J. Broughton, ' Alchemic, Friesland, and Silvanus; J. Chaplin, Lady Briar; and A. McDonald, Salt Spray and Petrarch.
One of the first out on to the track yesterday was. Lavish, with W. E. Pine in the saddle; and the filly moved very smoothly in a two-furlong flutter down the straight, being timed at 25 1-osec.
Hunting Lodge (W. J. Broughton) sprinted six furlongs on her own, and after putting three behind in 41sec she continued solidly to complete in lmin 22sec. It was quite an attractive effort.
] Dawning Light, looking particularly well, was sprinted down the straight, ■moving very smoothly. Forest Glow (G. Tattersall), one of Awapuni's candidates for the JEgrnont Steeplechase, had Widden (Broughfon) as a companion over a mile, and he had a shade the better of it at the finish after taking 44sec for the iast three furlongs. Salt Spray, an acceptor for the hurdles at Egmont, was sprinted six furlongs with A. McDonald in the saddle, and he wasted no time on the journey in cutting it out in lmin 23sec. Bazaine (C. Thomson) hopped away at the six furlongs and he was clocked to run the last five furlongs in lmin lOsec, maintaining an even pace throughout. Bodyline (W. E. Pine) followed a moment later and he galloped six furlongs, the last five taking him lmin lOsec. He looks particularly well at present. Manawatu (J. Chaplin), Petrarch (Tattersall), and Tail Light (Broughton) were galloped a mile. They went away together and ' Manawatu and Petrarch were soon a couple of lengths in front of Tail Light. They were together passing the three and still in line when they swept into the straight. There was an interesting tussle over the last bit and at the post Manawatu was not much more than a short head in front of the others. The time was lmin 50 4-ssec. Morrath (W. J. McDowell)' was sient over three fences and jumped exceptionally well. She is now quartered again at Awapuni. It was announced at the course yesterday morning that Invictus, Transact, and State Bank were unlikely to make the trip to Hawera.
