ACTIVITY OF MAU

MR. SAVAGE'S COMMENT

AWARE OF HAPPENINGS

The cable message from Samoa referring to Mau activity was referred to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) today.

Mr. Savage said that he did not see anything of a serious nature arising from the gathering. "Trade unions and others have parades with brass bands in New Zealand," remarked Mr. Savage, "and it may be that this is a celebration of the changed atmosphere in Samoa."

Mr. Savage said that he had received advice of the meetings from the Acting Administrator, but he did not think it was an occasion to do anything. He had. not sent a message. The Prime Minister recalled that he had sent a good-will message to the Samoans some weeks ago. He also reiterated that it was the Government's intention to send someone to Samoa to make a general investigation. He hoped it would be a Minister, and it was probable that the investigation would be made next month during the' time of the adjournment of Parliament. Mr. Savage said that he himself would not be able to make the trip. He had given a guarantee to Mr. O. P. Nelson that he would be returned to Samoa within four months. That period had not yet expired.
