RISK TO SAVE DOG

Descending into a 50ft hole at the Cockmanriings, near Orpington, Kent recently, a young man risked his life to save a stray dog. A man passing by heard the dog's cries, and police and firemen went to the scene with ropes George Carlow, aged 18, who lives a short distance away, volunteered to rescue the animal. In spite of the darkness of the hole and its crumbling sides, Carlow was lowered to the bottom. The dog disappeared into some caves which open into the hole. He eventually persuaded it to come to him, and they were hauled to safety.
