SAVING TWO LAUNCHES
At the height of the storm on Saturday afternoon it was fully expected that several, of the fishing launches ■anchored between Rainbow Island and the Island Bay beach would follow the launch San Marco to the rocks or the sand. Those close inshore were in a particularly dangerous position.
A very courageous feat was performed by four fishermen, who saved two launches from foundering at their moorings or being driven ashore. The launches were anchored in the middle of the bay near ■ the shore. One dragged its anchor, and drifted sternfirst down on the other. For nearly two hours, every sea threw'its stern against the: bow of the other,, causing considerable damage to both vessels.
Four fishermen, all heavily clad and^wearing waders, put off in a small dinghy through the heavy seas that were rolling in, and rowed off to the launches. One by one they managed to get aboard the seaward launch, and after considerable difficulty started its engine and drove it slowly out into the lee of the island. The perilous journey back to the bea-h was accomplished safely in a rema kably short time. '■
