Su Herbeit Hart has been appointed icpiesentative of the War Graves Commission in the tenitory between Cairo and Constantinople. The headquaiters at present aic at Cano. Sir Heibert is leaving for England about May 20. Bugadier-Gencral Sir Herbert Hail, KBE, CB, CMG, DSO, YD, uas Administrator of Western Samoa from April, 193 i; to July, 1935. Born in Cartcrton in 1882,-he adopted-the law as his piofession He seived in the South African War and was -awarded the Queen's.Medal (with two clasps)! On his . return... to. PJew . .Zealand he took a keen interest in military affairs. He was promoted to lieutenant in De 7 cember, 1908, and was appointed major in the-17th Begiment in- 1912.. He left for the Great War with the Main Body, N.Z.E.F., with the rank of major, in October, 19i4. He was later promoted to lieutenant-colonel and given command of the Wellington Battalion, vice Lieutenant-Colonel Malone, who was killed in action in August, 1915. He was awarded the D.S.O. for his services on Gallipoli. In December, 1916, he was granted the temporary rank of.colonel, and temporarily commanded the New Zealand Rifle Brigade during the absence of Brigadier-Gen-eral Fulton. In May, 1917, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general, thus becoming.the first officer of the New Zealand .Territorial Army to attain such rank. He was awarded the Croix do Guerre in 1919, and was five times mentioned in dispatches. His Knighthood was among the birthday honours of 1935. ,
