AMENDING BILL
SCOPE TO BE WIDER
Many classes of business which are only remotely affected by the existing Shops and Offices Act will be brought under definite control in the amending Bill which will be introduced in the House of Representatives next week by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong). "It will be a better Bill than the Factories Amendment Bill," said the Minister today, when asked if he could give a general outline of its provisions. The Bill, he added, brought the legislation affecting shops and offices into line with the other industrial laws which the Government had brought down. It would provide for minimum wages, shorter hours with the usual right of appeal in special cases, the prevention of "sweating," and it would be much wider in its scope than the existing legislation. Mr. Armstrong said he did not think it would be possible to have the Workers Compensation for Accidents Amendment Bill ready for introduction before the break in the session, as there was a good deal of work still to be done in connection with it.
