THE SUEZ CANAL

PROPOSAL FOR CLOSING

SANCTIONS OPPORTUNITY

ITALIAN RETALIATION

(Received April 27, noon.) LONDON, April 26. • An announcement by Lord Lytton that the League of Nations Union intended to urge the Government to close the Suez Canal in order to prevent Italy, further exploiting' Abyssinian successes has received wide attention at Geneva, where some sections hold the opinion that although it is late it would show the possibility of

applying further sanctions.

A message from Rome states that Senator Davenzati, in an article in the "Tribuna," vigorously attacks British publicists who are demanding the closing of the Suez Canal, and declares "We must repeat what we said in September, that to warlike acts we will reply with warlike acts."
