Eighty players took part in the stroke competition and qualifying round for the Hughes Memorial Cup on the Hutt links yesterday. The best round in the* senior division was done by W. H. Lees, jun., with 80, 8—72. J. Dunn, a new member, did best in the junior section with 87, 17—70. . The following 16 players qualified to play off on handicap for the Hughes Memorial Cup:—J. Dunn, 87, 17—70; D. F. Porter, 84, 13—71; W. H. Lees, jun 80, 8—72; C. H. Matthews, 96, 24 —72; J. F. Phillips, 97, 24—73; J. R. Trayes, 90, 17—73; A. J. Coleman, 87, 14_73; w. G. Home, 75, 1—74; C. E. Harman, 95, 20—75; D. Griffin, 96, 12— 75; B. Todd, 93, 18—75; A; Jenkins, 85, 9—76; E. Shields-Brown, 90, 14—76; C. N. Armstrong, 79, 3—76; J. Flanagan, 85, 9—76; Rana Wagg, 77, 1—76. The draw resulted as follows: —Dunn v. Rana Wagg; Home v. Harman; Phillips v. Jenkins; Shields-Brown v. Matthews; Armstrong v. Lees, jun.; Trayes v. Todd; Coleman v. Griffin; Porter v. Flanagan. The first round must be played by May 10. Following are results of competitions played at the weekend:—Bogey: E. Shields-Brown (11), all square; W. G. Home (1), F. Kember (2), G. C. Phillips (8), J. N. D. Macdonald (8), 1 down. Fourball bogey: N. A. Clouston (10) and W: G. Fisher (2), 6 up; W. G. Home (2) and H. K. Adamson (3), Second fourball: W. G. Home (2) and W. H. Lees, jun. (6), and C. P. Richmond (9), and R. F. A. Grey (17), 6 up. Home was in form on Saturday, covering the course in 73, 35 out and 38 back —a good performance considering the weather conditions. ■: The most popular man on the course during the weekend was P. Fordham, who holed his tee shot at the short eleventh ("Waterloo"), and duly paid the penalty.
