WARMER WEATHER

AND FAIR TO CLOUDY

Special forecast for Wellington:— Freshening: northerly winds.

Weather fair to cloudy and milder.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for variable winds at first over the North Island and for light to moderate northerlies elsewhere. Northerlies, however, will gradually become general and will freshen somewhat. The weather will be fair generally at first with rising temperatures, but unsettled conditions will gradually develop in districts with a westerly aspect and in the far south, and there will be some rain in those areas.

The westerly disturbance which affected the Dominion on Friday moved away eastward that night, and by Saturday morning moderate to fresh southerly winds had extended over the whole Dominion. Except in Westland, where the weather had improved, conditions on Saturday were cold and changeable with .scattered showers. During Saturday afternoon and evening there was some heavy rain in the Cook Strait area, this being associated with the passing of a slight secondary. Temperatures were still cold on Sunday, and there was a considerable amount of cloud in East Coast districts, but in most parts of the country the weather was fair, and by this morning it was fine generally. An anticyclone now covers the Dominion, and light southerly winds are ruling in the North Island, with more variable winds in the South Island. A shallow depression, however, is advancing in this direction from across the Tasman Sea.

Auckland on Friday and Saturday had a fresh westerly wind with showery weather. It was fair on Sunday with a light to moderate southwesterly breeze. This morning . the weather was fine with a gentle breeze from the same quarter.

Wellington's weather on Friday was mostly cloudy, with occasional light showers which accounted for two points of rain at Kelburn, while Lower Hutt had 17 points. A strong and squally north-westerly wind prevailed all day, but this turned to the south about 9.15 p.m. It was cold and dull on Saturday. During the morning there were occasional showers, but between 4 and 6.45 p.m. the rain was steady,' 39 points being recorded at Kelburn and 30 in Lower Hutt. The moderate to fresh southerly wind which blew all Saturday continued on Sunday morning, but during the afternoon it gradually moderated and decreased. Yesterday's weather was cold and mostly cloudy.

Christchurch had a fine day on Friday. A light northerly wind prevailed in the morning, but this changed to a fr.esh southerly during the afternoon, and heavy rain, totalling 88 points, fell during the night. Saturday's weather was cold and squally with heavy rain in the afternoon. The fall totalled 73 points. A high southerly wind eased off towards midnight, and on Sunday there was an improvement in the weather, the afternoon being cloudless and cool with a light southerly breeze. At 9 a.m. today it was overcast with an east-north-east breeze.

In Dunedin on Friday a light westerly wind which had been prevailing early in the day turned to a fresh south-westerly, and 53 points of rain fell. A strong southerly wind continued to blow on Saturday, and some light rain fell, but only two points. Sunday's weather was fine and sunny, with a light southerly wind, but at 9 a.m. today it was foggy with a light wind from the north.
