"TRAINING OF GROUND ENGINEERS"
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l would like to draw attention to the very limited facilities offered to the enthusiastic youths of New Zealand for training as ground engineers. In England examinations are held by the Air Ministry on exactly the same lines as required by the Defence Department in New Zealand, but whereas the examinations are held fortnightly in London and at various provincial centres as circumstances warrant, here in our progressive country the examinations are held only twice a year at Hobsonville and Wigram. The number of candidates is strictly limited to twelve and training courses are available at Wigram only, in May and November. We have in this city and country quite a number of young men who have the necessary technical training and specialised education who have no chance whatever of qualifying owing to the very small number who are trained annually. Here is a chance to give encouragement to our young men and to supply our country in time of need with properly-trained ground engineers. Surely the numbers desirous of taking this course could be greatly increased, examinations held more frequently, and training facilities provided at other centres. Why not Wellington?—l am, etc.,
