POPPY DAY

GRATIFYING RESPONSE

BEST FOR SOME YEARS

The most successful Poppy Day for a number of years was experienced by the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association on Friday, and it is anticipated that the income from the whole of the association's district will be more than £200 higher than last year. This morning a total of £1059 12s 7d was banked by the secretary. Proceeds from the city and suburbs amounted to £954 16s 9d, and from the Hutt Valley £101 6s lid. Collections at Eastbourne, Porirua, Upper Hutt, and Paraparaumu are still to come in, so that the amount already banked should be greatly added to. Donations by city firms and collections at certain colleges and schools still remain to be added to the total. The proceeds from the city and suburban stands this year are about £180 better than last year. An increase is shown in the Hult Valley returns, and a similar state of affairs is expected when the income from the outlying districts is checked. The sales exceeded the organisers' anticipations, and are regarded as a sign that the public still desire to give sympathetic assistance to those who served the country in time of war. So great was the demand for poppies that the authorities were forced to offer for sale poppies made for last year and also some bearing white tags, which were left over from the year before. The Returned Soldiers' Association wishes. to thank all who assisted, especially those who sold the poppies, and those who provided transport. At James Smith's corner, the Public Service girls, under Miss B. Patton, made the outstanding collection —£127 Is Id. The previous highest sum collected at that corner was £75 19s 4£d, in 1935. .
