THOUSANDS OF BICYCLES
No fewer than 17,603 vehicles, or 29 a minute, passed through the bottleneck—the Bank of New Zealand corner outlet from Cathedral Square—on Wednesday, March 4, between 8 a.m. and 5.30 p.m., states the Christchurch "Press." On that day a traffic census of vehicular traffic there, both northbound and south-bound, was taken by officers of the Christchurch City Council traffic department, and the information obtained was embodied in a report presented to the Christchurch City Council on Monday. Bicycles went by at the rate of 19 a minute, reaching a total of 11,335 by the end of the nine hours and a half. Private motor-cars, taxis, lorry vans, and heavy lorries numbered 4916, motorcycles 302, and horse vehicles 57. The number of cyclists might be expected to be more than when the last traffic census was taken at this point, in February. 1932, but actually it has declined by 904. Another decline is in the number of motor-cyclists, which was 265 fewer than in 1932. Horse vehicles were four fewer, but the real decline of the horse is shown by comparing the figures for 1915 with the latest census. In the twenty-one years the number of horse vehicles has diminished from 642 to -54, or to less than one-tenth of their former number.
