RAGWORT MENACE
WARNING TO MANAW'ATU
ONUS ON SETTLERS
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
PALMERSTON N., This Day.
"If ragwort is not attacked in a firm manner the* weed will spread rapidly in the Manawatu," stated the Department of Agriculture in a letter to the Kairanga County Council yesterday. "Everything possible is being done with the staff at our disposal, but, unfortunately, it was not possible for one person to attend to the noxious weed problem and other pressing work in the district. It has now become necessary- to prosecute a number oE settlers for failing to destroy ragwort."
It was pointed out that in the high country between the Tiritea and Tokomaru streams ragworl was growing in scattered places all over the hills and in the beds of streams.
Regret was expressed that the Department did not have more men available for inspection work, but it was decided to do all possible to minimise the danger of further spreading.
