CUSTOS BETTER

RIDERS FOR RICCARTON

(Special to the "Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

An exceptionally heavy fog was in evidence at Riccarton this morning. Fortunately there was no fast galloping, as timing horses would have been impossible. i The starting barrier at the five furlongs post was available and a number of trainers welcomed the opportunity of giving their young horses some education. Schooling proceedings were enlivened by some jumping. Streamline led Solwit twice over the two brush hurdles, both going well. Riding arrangements for the first day of the Canterbury Meeting include the following for the Great Easter: W. Cotton, Fair Weather: H. W. Hibberd, Cranford; and J. W. Jennings, Variant. Cotton will also be on Riptide in the

Great Autumn. No arrangements have been made for the riding of Dollar Bill and Davolo in the Great Easter Handicap, or for Davolo and The Surgeon in the Great Autumn.

G. H. Murfitt will go to Riverton this week to ride Pallaform in his steeplechase engagement on Saturday. He will then return home and will be on Haeretonu in the brush hurdle events at Riccarton next week.

The two-year-old Custos was in good order^ after his gallop yesterday. There was no heat in his legs, and the filling had disappeared, so F. D. Jones does not anticipate any' further difficulty in getting him ready for his races next week.

L. J. Ellis will leave tonight' for Auckland, where his mounts on Saturday will be Greek Shepherd, Light Comedy, Rereatu, Maxown, Inver, and Sweet Rose. Ellis will fly from Palmerston North on Tuesday morning and will be at Riccarton for the second day of the Canterbury Meeting. He will be on Kinnoull in the Great Autumn Handicap and Custos in the Challenge Stakes,

A veterinary examination of El Greco showed that he broke a sessamoid bone- when working yesterday. It seems probable the mishap will bring his racing career to a close.
