APPRENTICE DISPUTE
EMPLOYERS' APPLICATION
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
The adjourned hearing of an application by the Photo Engravers' Guild of Employers for the Arbitration Court's approval of an apprenticeship order was concluded today. Mr. Justice Page stated that the Court would take time to consider its decision. Mr J. Mclnnarriey, representing the Auckland Printers' Apprenticeship Committee and Auckland Printers and Related Trades Union, opposed the application. He said it was intended to include in the union all sections of the industry. The Guild's order would, if granted, be taken as a standard throughout New Zealand and undermine the efforts of apprenticeship committees that had been' functioning for many years. Moreover, the union intended as soon, as legislation was
passed to apply to the Court for a restoration of the 10 per cent.- cut. .
Mr. W. E. Anderson, who appeared with Mr. J. M. Hardcastle for the employers, said that the Guild was incorporated in ' November. The question at issue was whether the photo engravers -.vere covered by the Printing and Related Trades-Union. It had always been understood that the union had no right to dictate conditions for a branch industry the employees- in which were not members of the union.
