LONDON, April 5.
"Dining-rooms of the ashamed poor,* at which impoverished grandees may; enjoy cheap but substantial meals, have been opened in Madrid, reports the "Daily Telegraph's" correspondent.
Commenting on Senor Azana's repudiation of Communism, he states that it has not allayed the fears of the new poor who have been ruined by confiscation of their estates. Society women are doing their own housework, and heiresses are. painting rag dolls for a living. Latent civil war is undermining industry, and despair is seizing the enemies of the Reds. Young aristocrats are secretly joining - the Fascist movement, pledged to violence if necessary.
One Spanish statesman, summing up the Spanish tragedy, says that Spain might still be a monarchy if King Alfonso had been gifted with human understanding equalling that of Kin£ Edward when he recently visited the Glasgow slums. ' ■
