LONDON, April 4.
Cambridge won the University boat race agp.inst Oxford by five lengths in 21 minutes 6 seconds.
A bitter cross wind swept the river, raising white-capped wavelets. The wintry weather, which was intensified by early morning snowfalls, discouraged spectators, and as a result there was the smallest boat race crowd for many years.
Oxford won the toss and chose the Surrey station. The start was perfect, Oxford striking faster than their rivals. The boats raced neck and neck to Fulham Church, after which Oxford gradually pulled ahead. Cambridge, without a sign of effort, increased the pace approaching Harrods and gained slowly, despite the faster Oxford stroke, and led at Chiswick Eyot. They were soon a length ahead. After that they drew away and finished fresh compared with Oxford, though a little uneven. It was the slowest race since 1925 and the biggest margin for a win since 1929.
Cambridge have now won the boat race 47 times and Oxford 40, with one dead-heat. Results since 1906 are:—
