SOME QUEER HAPPENINGS
There were some queer happenings at the South Grafton (New South Wales) races on March 14. With J. Farmer in the saddle, Ohio won the first race. Before the second event, H. Ireland, trainer of Ohio, went into the jockeys' room, and, it was alleged, punched Farmer. The steward then jiined Ireland £10 for disorderly conduct. After the fourth race, the steward again called Ireland before him and charged him with "corrupt practices on the Turf." Farmer and another jockey named K. Langham gave evidence, and Ireland was disqualified for six months. Although one of Farmer's eyes was almost closed in the "argument" in the jockeys' room, he rode a desperate finish in the fifth race to make a dead heat for first, and then won the sixth event. From four mounts, he secured three wins, a black eye, and the last laugh.
