IH'LL TO BE INTRODUCED
ENCOURAGEMENT OF INDUSTRY
Another important Government measure, the Employment Promotion Bill, is likely to make its appearance before the session is far advanced, as it deals with a phase of the urgent policy of the new Cabinet.
The Bill is to be in the hands of the Hon. H. T. Armstrong (Minister of Labour), and its general purpose can be gathered from its title. It is expected to be of a comprehensive nature, giving the Government wider powers in respect to the development and encouragement of industries and other useful outlets for labour.
The probability is that the measure will enable the Bureau of Industries, already mentioned by the Government, to take practical shape. This organisation, in which the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) will be concerned, is likely to be given wide powers, including those of conducting inquiries into industrial conditions bearing on the promotion of employment, with the duty of making recommendations to the Government. There is legislation of similar character on the Statute Book, but the new measure will make the principles apply more directly to the policy which it enunciates.
