THE BEST SOLUTION
In the opinion of the. Bishop of Chelmsford" (Dr. Henry Wilson)- the best solution' of the Italo-Abyssinian conflict would be "a stalemate." "If Italy should win the war," he writes in his monthly letter to the diocese, "though nothing seems ■ less , likely at the present moment, it means that force has triumphed and, although the League of Nations. may. linger on as the . sentimental dream of idealists, it will be no longer able to command the support of really practical people. If Abyssinia should win,' then rio one can fail to see that the victory of' a black race over a-''white race is ' one of the worst things that cquld happen in the present state of-the world.- Tha situation in Africa, India, China,- and Japan is such that an object lesson of this kind will mean that the gravest problems will arise which will distract and distress the world for many years to come. Probably the best solution would be a stalemate, but the present spirit of at least one of the belligerents does not' hold out much likelihood of this taking place." -. . .
