LACK OF SUPPORT

LOCAL BOXING ASSOCIATION

PAST YEAR SHOWS LOSS

During the year.- under review the executive endeavoured to see that the high standard of the amateur sport was maintained at its previous high level (states the annual report of the Wellington Boxing Association), and it is claimed that, with the assistance of club officials, it has been successful.

The professional contests during the year were limited to three, in each instance between New Zealand contestants. The exponents matched in these contests were the best obtainable in New Zealand, and it is regretted that the public support did not provide encouragement for importation of overseas boxers to match against local talent or for further matches to be staged. ■ . ■' • ..

The financial position of the association suffered a serious set back during the season. The only tournament which returned a profit was the AitkenHawes contest; the'profit being £42 9s sd. On the Reeve-Jacobs match the loss was £27-11s rid; on the amateur championships £8, and on the RaynerJarvis contest,' in addition to showing a loss on the' tournament of £43 17s 6d, the association-was unfortunate in having the sum of- £69 5s 4d-stolen from the Town Hall. . . ;

During the season the, committee deemed it advisable to call a • special meeting of the members to consider the position of the association, and discuss its' future policy. It was- unanimously decided to carry on, and a number of members volunteered financial assistance. The sum of £40 14s. was donated, and the committee records its sincere appreciation of the help of the members who came to the assistance of the association.

Two new members were elected during the year, the total membership *of the association now being 84, including four life members.

The balance-sheet -shows that '• re: ceipts amounted to £493 11s 3d, including £353 8s 4d'from contests, £94 4s 6d from'subscriptions, and £40 14s from donations. Expenditure totalled £534 14s, involving a-loss on the year of £41 2s 9d. The principal items of expenditure were: Purses and expenses, £96 13s 3d; amateurs, £114 7s 3d; rents, £79; wages, £40 19s 4d; advertising and printing, £97 13s. The year closed with a cash balance of £21 17s 4d. and a balance of assets over liabilities of £146 11s 4d.
