OBITUARY

CAPTAIN H. E. GREENSTREET

Captain H. E. Greenstreet, rormerly commodore of the New Zealand Shipping Company, and a wsll-known commander of steamers of that company trading between England _ and New Zealand, died recently at Sutton, England.

The late Captain Greenstreet, who was in his eighty-fourth year, joined H.M.S. Worcester as a cadet in 18p6. Two years later he went to sea as a midshipman, and later served as an officer of a number of sailing ships. In 1881 he was given the command of the Mataura, one of the first ships fitted with refrigerating appliances. Subsequently,' he was appointed second, and then first, mate of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Aorangi. In 1885. he became master of the Huapehu, and later was placed in charge of new steamers of the- company as they, were completed. He made fifteen voyages in. the, old Rimutaka. He was very popular with the travelling public, and had the remarkable record of having rounded the Cape of Good Hope 95 times and Cape Horn 75 times and made 90 complete voyages round the world. Captain Greenstreet who retired from active, sea service in 1917 is survived by two sons, Messrs. Lionel and Percival Greenstreet, and a daughter, Mrs. Searle, of Katikati. Mrs. G. E. Anson, of Lower Hutt, is a cousin.
