MAJOR MEASURES
GOVERNMENT POLICY
MAY APPEAR TONIGHT
THIIEE BILLS HEADY
There is a possibility of some of the Government's main legislative proposals making their appearance in the House of Representatives this evening, but everything depends on the attitude adopted by the official Opposition towards the Address-in-Reply debate. The Government has three main measures ready for introduction—the Reserve Bank of ' New Zealand Amendment Bill, the Government Railways Amendment Bill, and the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill. The Prime Minister (the Hon. M. J. Savage) stated today that this afternoon the Government would introduce a Bill to validate the appointment of Mr. M. J. Connelly to the Legislative Council. If no objection was raised, this measure would be put through all stages this afternoon and the House would then adjourn until this evening when the Address-in-Reply debate would be resumed by the Leader of the Opposition (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes). Mr. Savage said it was his intention to follow the Leader of the Opposition, but the course of events depended entirely on the attitude that Mr. Forbes would adopt. If Mr. Forbes announced that the Opposition did not intend to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the Address-in-Reply debate the way would be paved for the introduction of Government measures. It was not intended to broadcast the preliminary proceedings in connection with these Bills, said Mr. Savage, but when the second reading stage was reached selected speakers from all sides of the House would go on the air. It is understood that the Opposition has decided that Mr. Forbes will be the only speaker in the Address-in-Reply debate unless events in the House take an unexpected turn.
