TO BE COMPLETED
S.I. MAIN TRUNK
GOVERNMENT'S INTENTION
While indicating that the Government fully intended to go ahead with the completion of the South Island Main Trunk railway, the Prime Minister (the Hon. M. J. Savage) stated today that he could not be dogmatic about it, as there were many important factors that had to be taken into account in undertaking a task of this magnitude. It was essential that the most modern methods should be adopted, and it would be done all in good time. It was obvious that questions of method, approach, and finance would have to be taken, into consideration before the work could be started. Mr. Savage made it plain that the Government was not going to be rushed into action.
Referring to the completion of the East Coast railway, the Prime Minister stated that the Minister of Public works was now engaged in preparing plans for the resumption of work on this line.
