LONDON, March 31

A message from Rome states that a new Italian drive has begun in Abyssinia from the east along the French Somaliland border. The Italians have occupied Sardo, 100 miles from Dessie, virtually ensuring the domination of the entire Sultanate of Aussa, whose loyalty to the Emperor has never been wholly certain.

Two columns operating from Assab and Bailul advanced 200 miles and occupied Sardo, which is a : junction of caravan routes connecting Norths crn Abyssinia with the sea. The operation was carried out in a volcanic region with a temperature of 140 degrees-Twenty-five aeroplanes dropped food, water, and fuel for the advancing soldiers. The columns repeatedly drov« off Abyssinian cavalry and infantry.

A message from Jibuti states that the Italians again bombed Harrar, but thai little- damage resulted.
