"A NATION OF PRIGS?"
(To the Editor.) • Sir—l had no intention of entering this controversy on the subject of "homework," relieved though I am that the matter is being given prominence. A new phase has, however, developed by the appearance in your columns of a letter signed "17." This brings forth a question which deserves the serious consideration of the educational authorities. Are we, through our system of education and the examination fetish, running the risk of turning out a nation of prigs from our successful candidates? Any student who is found to be capable of using the first personal pronoun in self-praise over twenty times in the space of a short letter, should have impressed on him that there is such a word as "modesty" in the English language.—l am, etc., ANXIOUS FOR THE EACE.
