SALE OF BOOKS
Following the example of Sir Samuel Hoare, the Earl of Cromer sent a heap of surplus books to Sotheby's. High prices were not expected, and the total for about 300: works was £141 10s. Dr. Thomas Hodgkin's "Italy and Her Invaders," published at Oxford, 1892-99, brought £6 ss, and the English translation of "Rome in the Middle Ages," by F. Gregorovius, £6 10s. Gladstone's "Studies on Homer," 1858,' with nine other classical works, realised only £2 15s, and six parcels of miscellaneous books,* including works on Oriental crime and .the Mahdi, went for £6. In the earlier part of the sale, Sotheby's first this year, John Speed's 1676 Atlas of the Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain brought £6'
