TROTTING BREVITIES
The Timaru Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting will be held at Washdyke on Saturday. • , . Autumn Lou was finishing well over two miles on the last day at Wellington, and her. ability in the slush, should be remembered.
Precious Metal is open to improvement; and M. C. McTigue.'s. pupil is bred to go fast. By Rey de Oro, he is out of Lady Dillon, by Harold Dillon—Lady. Tempest, 4min 39sec. ' . Superior Rank was the "biggest disappdintment of all on the. last day of the -Wellington Trots. He could not pass a single one of the-field, and it left backers of the favourite nonplussed. '''■-•;
Despite Casanova's recent poor form, the knowledge will intrude itself :that the Wrack colt is one of the best three-year-olds of the season and Only requires good track conditions to prove it. . , ...
.' Sea Gift will- take, on a strong field of pacers- in the Timaru Cup on Saturday, and;although trotters are, usually at a: disadvantage if the speed is o^i from: the," start, Sea Gift is an outstanding mare, and quite likely to beat the hoppled merchants. Celebrity could not handle the heavy track during the Wainui Handicap on the second day at Wellington, and was always toiling in the rear. This filly looks a'bit more than useful.
Diversion was backed confidently to beat Blair Athol in the Wainui Handicap at Hutt Park on Monday, but she was beaten when she broke at the home turn.. She is not yet by any means the perfect-mannered racehorse, but experience is working a gradual improvement. Ahuareka is the only New Zealandbred winner by the dual- Cup winner Ahuriri, but she will never be. haH as good. She was totally outclassed at Wellington, but was meeting except tionally promising improvers, and she may get a stake when the company is1 average. If Dusky Chum is brought on the North Island' -'circuit this season he is going to make his presence felt in the maiden division. Although not as solid as he riiight be, he has an abundance of? speed, and has been knocking once .or ,twice. , He failed badly in the heavy going at Hutt -Park, but was' quite fair1 on top of the ground.
Mr. G. R. Hunter, who has been appointed a member of the Legislative Council, is a well-known trotting enthusiast, and secretary of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association. Mr. Hunter has owned and raced a number of trotters and pacers, including Hard ' Words, Isabel .Patch, Shoelace, and Philario, the last-named engaged in. the Futurity Stakes at Timaru this week, and in partnership with Mr. P. C. Webb he lias owned the gallopers Gold- Pit, .Topere, Sapient, Merry Peel,- Wino, Matunga; and Forum.
