WON BY GREYMOUTH BAND

BLIND BOY'S SUCCESS

• (By Telegraph—Press Association.) 1 NEW PLYMOUTH, February 25. ( The ■ Greymouth Municipal Band won the first B grade test in the New. j Zealand brass bands contest at Puke- ■; kura Park tonight. Taranaki Regimental was second, Hastings Citizens' ' third,' Wellington Boys' -Institute ■• fourth, and Waitara Ivlunicipal fifth. No points were announced by the judge, Mr. A. Baile. The Greymouth Band, the judge commented, gave an outstanding performance. Some of the bands found ■■ the test piece "Rienzi" (Wagner) too ~ difficult. ■ - . A feature of the solo events was the winning of the B;flat .championship by a practically .blind boy, Alan Morton, a member of : the Auckland Regimental and; Blind Institute Bands. The music ,was. memorised from Braille. The announcement of Morton's success was received witli prolonged applause, and the judge was astonished when he learned the winner ■ was blind. Results of solo and quartet test* are:— , B Flat Cornet.—A. Morton (Auckland Regimental), 95 points, 1; W. Stevenson (Woolston), 94 points, 2; F. Bowes (Timaru),93 points, 3. ■ ■ Quartet (Oberon).—Port Nicholson Silver No. 1, 86 points, 1; Woolston No. 1, 85 points, 2; Woolston No. 2, 82 points, 3.
