MANAWATU SHOWS

ASSOCIATION'S LOSSES

(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTONN., This Day. When the general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association met yesterday a number of letters were received expressing sympathy with the association in the severe losses it had sustained through hurricane damage. The Royal Agricultural Society is to be informed in answer to an inquiry that the Spring Show will be held either on November 4, 5, and 6 or November 5, 6, and 7. There was a suggestion from one member that the fixture should be reduced to two days and a final decision was deferred pending a report from a special .sub-com-mittee which is investigating several financial problems. < ■ The secretary reported that advice! already to hand indicated that there would be the usual strong competition in the dairy section at the Winter Show in June. ' There ■ was very little space left to be let in the machinery hall and a Motor Olympia would again be held. The secretary reported that the excessive destruction wrought by the wind had brought to a head what had long been evident, that the, finances were not in a healthy or promising position. The association had mortgages totalling £17,000 on which the annual interest charges were £700. In addition, there were heavy maintenance charges and if headway was : to be made, a reorganisation of a number of matters would have to be made. He proposed that a committee report on the following:—(1) Possible sale of land that can be done • without; (2) plan for dealing with the, hurricane damage and a plan for building during the next five years so that nothing would be erected and have to be pulled down again too soon owing to lack of foresight; (3) a severe scrutiny of the budget of prize lists and general show expenses. . Mr. Kissling reported that he had compared the Manawatu entrance fees and prize lists with those of many other associations and had found many discrepancies in many directions. ; The finance committee is to bring down, a report. ,
