VIOLENT OUTBURSTS

CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES

DEBATE ON SOVIET PACT

ALLEGED PROPAGANDA

graph-Copyright.

(Received February 19, 1.10 p.m.) PARIS, February 18.

Violent outbursts occurred in the Chamber of Deputies on the third day of the debate on the Franco-Soviet pact. M. Taittinger, leader of the Fascist "Jeunesse Patriote," declared that the Red Army was incapable of fighting a first-class Power and would require six months to take the offensive. Consequently he urged a FrancoGerman rapprochement, contending that Germany must not be led to believe that she is being encircled.

M. Henriot, an extreme Rightist, amid shouts of "Deserter!" and "War-shirk-er!" accused the French Communists of carrying on subversive propaganda. He read out lists of alleged subsidies paid to French newspapers, and eventually so angered the Communists that they drowned his words by slamming their desks.

Finally, M. Henriot, shaking his fist, shouted (referring to the Communist Deputies): "We will only sign the pact when the scum in the pay of the Soviet are arrested."

The meeting was suspended.
