FINE AT FIRST
BUT RAIN LATER Special forecast for Wellington:— Strong westerly winds, backing later to southerlies. Weather fine at first, but some showers likely later with the southerly change. Temperatures becoming cooler. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for moderate to strong westerly to south-westerly winds reaching gale force in places in the far south and along the east coast of the South Island, but these will gradually decrease. The weather will be mainly fair in east coast districts, but changeable generally, with passing showers and hail in parts of the far southern coast. Conditions, however, will gradually improve. Temperatures will be cool. The intense westerly depression that crossed the Dominion during the night was responsible for intermittent rain in districts with a westerly aspect and in the far south. In the latter area hail showers fell in places. East of the main ranges, however, the weather has been mostly fine and temperatures mild to warm. Winds yesterday were westerly to northerly in direction, moderate to strong, and reaching gale force in places during the night in the Cook Strait and Foveaux Strait areas. By this morning the direction was mainly westerly and in places south-westerly. At Auckland yesterday it was fine in the morning but cloudy in the afternoon, and last night light rain fell. At 9 a.m. today it was cloudy and showery! with a west-south-westerly breeze. Wellington had'a fine day with 12.7 hours of bright sunshine and a fresh to strong north-westerly wind, rising in parts to over 50 m.p.h. between 11 p.m. and 12.45 a.m. Christchurch had a fine pleasant day, with an east-north-easterly breeze blowing, which freshened in the afternoon. Since last night the wind has been 'north-westerly, and at 9 a.m. today it was still fane and clear. Dunedin had a moderate to strong northerly wind and the weather was fine and clear in the morning, but in the afternoon it became dull, and showers fell last night. At 9 a.m. today there was a strong south-westerly wind blowing, but the sky. was clear. _____ (
