EIGHT-OAR ROWING

INCREASING POPULARITY

ASSOCIATION'S VIEWS

;A feeling that eights would replace pairs and double sculls on future New Zealand programmes, and that U would not be long before eight-oared events would appear on Wellington local programmes, was expressed at a meeting of the Wellington Rowing Association last evening, when eight-oared rowing was discussed at length. It was stated that Auckland already realised that public opinion had a leaning towards eights, as being more spectacular for the spectator, and the Wellington body concurred in that viewpoint. It was recognised, however, that the difficulty at present was the expense of acquiring eight-oared boats, but members of the association agreed that if attractive enough prize-money were offered entries would be forthcoming, Mr. A. W. White presided over the meeting. After a full discussion it, was decided to increase the time between regatta races, as, although the interval before the start of events had been reduced to a quarter of an hour with a view to popularising rowing for the public, it had been found that tKat period was too short to enable crews to reach the starter. Saturday, March 14, was decided upon as the date for the Wellington inter-club eights.
