DEATH OF MAN O' WAR
Man o' War, whose death from internal trouble last week is reported from the south, was the leading colonial-bred sire for some years up to the time of his death. He did not have a numerous progeny, and with limited opportunities he sired some high-class pacers, notably War Buoy, the champion juvenile of, his years, and who finished second in the last New Zealand Cup. .. Man o' War was bred in Australia, being by Peri Huon from Wilga. He was bred by J. B. Ferguson, New South Wales, and was purchased by W. J. Carter, who drove him to victory in the Sydney Thousand of 1920. Later that year Carter brought him .o New Zealand, and he raced here until 1928. He was twenty-two years old this season. ■ , . „ Man o' War's total stake winnings, must have approached £11,000, because he earned £10,095 in New Zealand. He was purchased soon after his arrival in New Zealand by the late Mr. J. R. Corrigan, of Hawera, and was trained by J. Bryce, who won with him two Auckland Cups and a Nationa Cup. Later. Man o' War was purchased by Mr. G. McMillan, of Auckland, and then became the property of T. H. McGirr, of Methven, who first used him for the stud in Canterbury- After standing at Methven for several years, Man o' War was passed on to Mr. FP. Brosnan. of Kerry town, where he was Jocatcd at the lime oC his death.
