WINNING HIT'S SUCCESSES

Three successes were recorded by offspring of the Stonyhurst sire Winning Hit at the C.J.C. Meeting at Riccarton last Saturday.. Besides Sovereign Lady in the Trial Stakes, Tunneller and Fracas were also winners. In addition Rival Shot, who was second to Sovereign Lady, is another of Winning Hit's progeny. Winning Hit is a colonial-bred sire who has made his mark at the stud. He has undoubtedly had better opportunities than most colonial-bred stallions, but he has proved his worth, and it is interesting to note that one of his sons, Cricket Bat, has now also commenced a career at the Stud. Winning Hit, a dashing performer on the race track, was winner ot ootn the New Zealand and the Great Northern Derbies for the late bir George Clifford, as well as the Dunedin Guineas, Stead Memorial Cup, C.J.U Middle Park Plate, and Champagne Stakes, and Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. He was bred in 1918, and is a son of the Treadmill horse Autumnus and the Cannie Chiel—Lady Wayward mare Winning Way. ' Lady Wayward was a daughter of Elusive, whom bir George Clifford purchased at the dispersal sale of the St. Albans (Victoria) Stud in 1900 for 525g5, and who was destined to prove such a great bargain for him. Winning Hit is thus colonialbred for several removes on both sides of his pedigree, which makes^his success as a stallion even the more interesting. ■ ' |
