VARIOUS ACTIVITIES
The monthly meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society (Inc.), was held at Red Cross rooms, Dr. A. Gillies presiding.
The president referred to the death of his Majesty King George V. The following resolution was carried in silence:—"Members of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society (Inc.), in conference assembled, desire to place on record their profound sorrow at the loss of King George V and extend to Queen Mary and members of the Royal Family sincere and heartfelt condolence."
The following.motion was also carried: —"On his Accession to the Throne members of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society (Inc.) extend expressions of loyalty and good wishes to King Edward VIII for a long, peaceful, &nd happy reign." An allocation of £99 was received from headquarters from the Macarthy Trust for relief purposes. A grant of £10 from the "Lots of Luck" Art Union for auxiliary work was received and acknowledged. A donation was received of £1 Is from Mr. and Mrs. Rowley towards Red Cross aid in Abyssinia. This was referred to headquarters for action.
Messrs. James Smith, Ltd., wrote thanking the society for providing a first aid detachment in connection with the Tom Brown picnic. A letter was received from Galina Bogatiroff, the Russian girl assisted by' the Red Cross Society, conveying Christmas greetings, and reporting on progress which she is making. Mrs. F. W. Kemp wrote submitting her resignation to enable her'to visit England. This was not accepted, but leave of absence was granted. Members expressed appreciation of Mrs. Kemp's long and loyal services. A request was received from the Central Command to co-operate in the forthcoming searchlight tattoo by nominating a queen candidate. After discussion it was resolved that whilst entertaining every support for the cause the society was unable to accede to the request; ■ A cheque amounting to £13 15s from the Rose Day proceeds was received from the R.S.A. ' ■ Through the efforts of the Junior Red Cross it was reported that sixty-seven families had been given Christmas cheer in the form of orders for groceries, meat, fruit, clothing, etc. Toys had also' been given. It was stated that activities had been again taken up in instructional work at the schools and colleges, at the cafeteria at the Wellington Hospital, and the Ladies' Auxiliary. , •'■j . The president said that on1 behalf ot the blind £15 had been spent on a small money gift as a Christmas present for each blind person in the community. The party travelling from the institute on Christmas vacation had been met and accommodated during its stay m Wellington... A very successful picnic outing had been held at Paekaftariki, and a further picnic was being organised to take place at Eastbourne, transport on ferry boats being granted free of Charge. Thanks were extended to all those who had co-operated. Progress, it was said, had been made in the arrangement of a camp for local V.A.D.'s. Headquarters, however, contemplated during the year a camp of a larger scale which would embrace V.'A.D.s from all centres. It was therefore decided to suspend the local camp in favour of the Dominion effort.
