SOME RECENT MEETINGS

1.0.0. F., N.Z. Port Nicholson Encampment.—Bro. *W. J. Jarvis, C.P., occupied the principal chair. One application for membership was received. The syllabus for hand-book No. 9 was adopted. The installation of officers was conducted by Bro. G. F. Rudkin, G.W., assisted by Bro. Tanner, P.C.P., Bro. Batten, C.P., Bro. Mothes, P.C.P., Bro. Cohen, and Bro. Valentine, P.G.M., P.C.P., The following were installed: C.P., Bro. E. Miller; H.P., Bro. W. J. Jarvis; S.W., Bro. H. J. Rowney; F.S., Bro. F. Dales; J.W., Bro. W. Munro; guide, Bro. P. H. Newson; second watch, Bro. Binstead; 0.5., Bro. F. Kilby. Visitors received votes of welcome. Zealandia Lodge (Newtown) .—Bro. J. O. Josling, N.G., presided over a large attendance, visitors including Bros. G. P. Rudkin, Grand Warden, R. J. Mathers, D.D.G.M., A. H. Valentine, P.G.M. (Dunedin), F. J. Jones, Grand Chaplain, P. J. Lee, A. E. Phillips, and H. J. Rowney. Four members were reported on the sick list, and relative sick pay and quarterly accounts were passed. Two candidates were nominated. The syllabus for the ensuing year was adopted. Bro. F. Fifield submitted the final report on the recent children's Christmas party, recording a very successful function. The committee was thanked for its services, and an extended committee, comprising Bros. P. Fifield, C. C. Blakemore, H. A. Hardham, H. J. Darkins, R. W. Harvey, G. Steel, H. W. Guy ton, J. L. Cairns, C. H. Smith, and.E. D. Wallis was elected to function this year. The N.G. reported on an official visit to Pride of Karori Lodge. Votes of welcome were responded to by the visitors. Maraenui Lodge (Miramar) .—Bro. A. Winter, N.G., presided. Quarterly returns and accounts were adopted, relative payments being authorised. A report was received on the recent children's Christmas party, recording that a very successful function had been held, and a credit balance brought forward. One member was reported to have been advanced to the third degree by District Lodge, and another was authorised to receive the first degree. Two entrants for the term ritual competitions conducted by District Lodge were announced, and after some discussion of matters of general interest the evening was concluded with cards. Rose of Wellington Rebekah Lodge. —Sis. M. Flaws, N.G., presided over a good attendance, including Bros. R. J. Mathers, D.D.G.M., and A. H. Valentine, P.G.M., Dunedin. One member ■was entered for the junior term ritual competition. The D.D.G.M. conveyed greetings from Rangi Rebekah Lodge, recently visited at Rotorua, and Bro. Valentine extended greetings from Ruth Lodge, Dunedin. ■ Esther Rebekah Lodge (Karori). — Sis. A. McKeand, N.G., presided. Two. lady candidates were initiated. The syllabus for the year commencing April 1 was adopted. A vote of welcome was accorded Bro. G. F. Rudkin, Grand Warden, Bro. H. A. Valentine, P.G:M. (Dunedin), Sis. M. Sergent, L.D.D.G.M., . Sis. H. Whitwell (Welcome "Rebekah Lodge; Nelson), and Sis. L. G. Hope (Rose of Wellington Rebekah Lodge), who suitably responded. Games concluded the evening. Victoria Rebekah Lodge.—Sis. Duske, N.G., presided over a good attendance. Two resignations were accepted with regret. Members were advised of the annual picnic to be held on a date to be arranged. Nominations were received for the term ritual competitions. A statement regarding Christmas party receipts and expenditure was submitted. One nomination for membership was received. ORDER OF DRUIDS. Poneke Lodge (Petone).—Two meetings have been held during the month of January, at both of which A.D. Bro. Nicholson presided over good attendances. At the first meeting the lodge ■was favoured by a visit from Bro. Newman, of Stonehenge Lodge, and Bro. Martin, the presiding officer of Frankton Lodge. The bards submitted their reports on the progress of sick brethren and sick pay amounting to £12 10s was passed for payment. A candidate was admitted to membership by initiation. Before commencing the business of the second meeting, held on January 27, the A.D., before commencing the business of the evening, paid a loyal tribute to the memory of the late King George, moving a motion that all business be curtailed as a mark of respect. The motion was carried, members standing in silence. One candidate was admitted to membership by initiation. The bards submitted their reports on the progress of sick brethren, and sick pay amounting to £13 4s Bd, together with one maternity claim of £6, was passed for payment.. One application for membership was received. The secretary. reported that the lodge could shortly expect delivery of the steel work for the new hall, and approval was given for an official survey to be undertaken. In compliance with the resolution to curtail business, several items of minor importance were left over until next lodge night. A vote of welcome was accorded visiting brethren, to which they replied individually. .Excelsior Lodge.—Members of Court Northland (A.0.F.) attended to play jndoor bowls. * * Kia Ora Lodge.—About twenty-four members attended the recent meeting at which one new member received his credentials and another his affiliation card. Members stood in silence to the memory of the late King George, the organist playing the "Dead March." Harmony Concluded the evening . Haeremai Lodge.—There was a fair attendance, including several members of the order from H.M.S. Wellington, then in port The organist played "The Garland of Flowers," brothers standing in silence to the memory of the late King George V. Emulation Lodge (Karori).—The last meeting was the seventh anniversary of the founding of the lodge, at which there was a good attendance. Members stood in silence to the memory of the late King, the organist playing Chopin's Funeral March." Harmony was held at the conclusion of the meeting. MANCHESTER UNITY ODDFELLOWS. Loyal Rose of the Valley Lodge.— The Noble Grand, Bro. Hewer, presided over a fair attendance. A discussion took place relative to the holding of the usual picnic, and it was decided to hold same. Bro. Smith was installed as guardian for the ensuing term. Bro. Seddon reported on affairs connected with the Juvenile Lodge. Loyal Britannia Lodge.—Bro. D. J. M. Mcllraith presided over a good attendance. Bros. Stewart and Williams were congratulated on being elected to the positions of Deputy Grand Master and member of the district management committee respectively. -Two candidates were initiated. Bro. Treadwell reported regarding the death of Bro. J. Stent, and a motion of condolence with the relatives was passed. Past Provincial Grand Master, Bro. Jack, of the Otago district, and Bro. Lilburne, of Milton, were accorded lodge honours. At the conclusion of lodge members enjoyed games of bowls. Loyal Newtown Lodge.—At the last meeting Bro. S. Eades presided over a good attendance, Bro. Webb acting as vice-grand. ■ One new member was initiated, Bro. L. Spencer being conductor and Bro. A. Rhodes delivering the Lecture Master's charge. The Noble Grand extended a welcome to visiting members, including Bro. Patten, a Past Grand of Good Intent Lodge, Auckland, and Sister Popple, of Napier Lodge. At the conclusion of the meeting members enjoyed games of cards. Loyal Sister Wallis Lodge.—At the recent meeting Sister E. Tobin presided. It was decided to visit Masterton Lodge early in March. A report was given of the meeting held at Moera Lodge for the purpose of conferring degrees, at which meeting the District Grand Master installed Bro. Stewart as Deputy Grand Master. Bro. Williams was also installed as a member of the district management committee. Loyal Rose of the Valley Lod^e.— Bro. H. Hewer, Noble Grand, presided over a fair attendance. Sick reports were received and accounts passed for payment. Bro. Norris was nominated for the position of vice-president and member of the management committee of the Wellington Hospital Association. Picnic arrangements were completed. Members later enjoyed a pleasant hour at ping-pong and cards. 'Loyal Petone Lodge.—The fortnightly meeting was held recently, the Noble Grand presiding over a good attendance. Bro. Baraclough was accorded lodge honours. Routine business dis-

posed of members adjourned for harmony. ■ T Loyal Britannia Lodge.—Bro. D. J. Mcllraith presided over a good attendance. Bro. Godber reported the death of Bro. Valentine Reid, members standing in silence while a motion of condolence with the relatives was passed. One new member was initiated. Bros. Stewart and Chivers, Christchurch Lodge, were accorded lodge honours. At the close of business the lodge adjourned for harmony, games of bowls being played. . Loyal Petone Lodge.—The fortnightly meeting was held recently with a good.attendance. Routine business disposed of the lodge adjourned for harmony, games of indqpr bowls and cards being played. Bro. Fleet was successful in winning the "silver button" from Bro. Wilson, thus making him the bowling singles champion of a Loyal 6Rose of the Valley Juvenile L O dge—The first annual Christmas tree function was held during the recent holidays, with a large attendance of members and their parents. The hall was specially decorated for the occasion. A welcome was given to the Dis-' trict Grand Master, Bro. Cropp. "When replying the D.G.M. said that the senior lodges looked to the juveniles to provide members for the Manchester Unity senior lodges in the years to come, the training they were receiving as juvenile members being of great value for future membership. Items of entertainment were given by members of the Juvenile Lodge. The judges were Sister Reynard, Sister Wallis Lodge, and Bro. Holmes, Rose of the Valley Lodge. The prizes for the best items were awarded to Sisters Mackay, Cheeseman, Akers, Young, Binns, and Bros. Binns, Westbury, and Mackay. A special prize was given to Sister Wilson and James Crundwell, who had obtained the most candidates. The prize was donated by Sister Reynard and Bro. Bird, whilst Sister Rushton, of Moera Lodge, donated cakes for supper. Bro. B. J. Seddon led the community sing. Bro. Seddon thanked all those members who assisted in making the function a success. ORDER OF FORESTERS. Kilbirnie Tent.—Sister Johnson, C.R., presided over a good attendance. The C.R. extended a welcome to members of the Wellington Provincial Council who were visitors to the Tent. Bro. Bennett replied on behalf of the council. During the evening officers of the council installed the new officers of Kilbirnie Tent as follows:—C.R., Bro. A. Johnson; Dep. R., Bro. H. Johnson; Levite, Sister Heines; guardian, Bro. Heines; steward, Bro. G. Johnson; secretary, Bro. Chadburn; treasurer, Bro. Fathers; juv. supts., Sisters Johnson and Chadburn, and Bro. F. G. Johnson; delegate, to Med. Inst., Bro. F. G. Johnson; auditor, Bro. G. Johnson. One hew member was admitted. Bro. Dixon was instructed to take charge of the social hour for next meeting. Seasonable greetings were received from the Wellington Provincial Council, the district officers, and the District C.R. The meeting closed in harmony. ORDER OF FORESTERS. Court Sir George Bowen.—Bro. E. Jackson, C.R., presided over a good attendance of members. Before business the following resolution was passed:— "That this Court at its first meeting since the passing of his most gracious and beloved Majesty King George V desires to place on record its deepest sympathy with the Royal Family in their hour of bereavement. Further, we desire to record our. allegiance to the new Monarch, his most gracious Majesty King Edward VIII. The King is dead, long live the King." The sick visitor, Bro. S. A. Griffiths, made his report. The delegate to the Hospital Association reported on the finances of the association, and referred to the notice of motion regarding the proposed reduction in fees. One new candidate was initated and one proposed for membership. Accounts amounting to £72 5s lOd were passed for payment. Loyal Rose of Valley Auxiliary Juvenile Lodge—Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows.—At the last meeting there was a good attendance, and Sister Audrey Wilson was in the president's chair. The elective secretary, Bro. England, intimated that he had enrolment forms relative to two boys who wished to become members. The conductor, Sister Ella Rushton, conducted them to the vice-president, Sister Binns, and the acting past president initiated them. The president addressed the new members and presented them with their badges, after which they were welcomed into the order by all members singing the Ode of Welcome. The superintendent gave a report on the very successful Christmas party that was held, and intimated the winners of the prizes for various competitions. Bro. Pemberton, a visitor from the adult lodge at Moera, congratulated the officers on the rendition of their charges, and compared the businesslike manner with which they discharged their duties very favourably with procedure in many adult lodges of the order. Another visitor addressed the juveniles in respect to their interest in their lodge and prospects of still further increasing their numbers during the coming year. Bro. Seddon announced a competition between the Loyal Masterton Juveniles and the Loyal Rose of the Valley Juveniles. Greetings were received from the Manawatu Juvenile Lodge. Apologies for absence were received and accepted from the Sisters PenhaU. At conclusion of the meeting Bro. Seddon conducted a community sing, and games and supper ended a very enjoyable evening. rrmnv\ Loyal Newtown Lodge .(M.U.1.0.0.F.) -The usual fortnightly meeting was presided over by Bro. S. Bland Past Grand (Acting Noble Grand), and the Vice Grand's Chair was occupied by Bro S fades, Past Grand. The Noble Grand disclosed the new password. Si arrangements for 1936 i were discussed, and it was suggested that the lodge again hold a picnic in view of the success of last year's gathering. Also it was decided to make endeavours to hold quarterly card evenings to which members could invite friends. Routine business was transacted, and at close of meeting members played cards until supper was served. .Loyal Sister Wallis Lodge (M Ulo;O.F.).—The. usual: fortnightly meeting was presided over by Sister Joyce Couper (Noble Grand). There was a fair attendance of members and several visitors from other districts. Lodge honours were accorded the visiting sisters and brother, and responses of appreciation were made. Discussion on a proposed visit to Loyal Masterton resulted in finality being deferred until next meeting night The lodge balancesheet was read and tabled until quarter night. The report and balance-sheet of the Friendly Societies' Fidelity Guarantee Association was read. A request for clearance in regard to an Engnsn Lodge was granted. Sister Levy proposed two candidates. The social committee was asked to meet at close of lodge to discuss the drawing up of a programme for 1936. The resignation of a sister was not accepted pending the financial secretary obtaining more information regarding the necessity for same At the close of meeting members and visitors were served with supper Southern Cross Lodge No. 24, Wellington.—Bro. H. Miller, P.G., presided over a large attendance of members and visitors, including Bro. Cx. Jb. Kuakin, Grand Warden, Bro. R. J. Mathers, D.DG.M., Wellington, Bro. A. H. Valentine, P.G.M., Dunedin, Bro. P. J. Lee, G.L. representative, Bro. H..A. of Port Nicholson Encampment No. b, and Bro. J. O. Josling, N.G., and officers of Zealandia Lodge No. 48. Accounts totalling £58 19s 2d were passed Twelve members were reported on sick-list, and sick-visitors' reports taken. Three candidates were elected and initiated, and another candidate | was nominated. One member was authorised to receive First Degree at District Lodge. The social committee reported that Bro. A. Leigh Hunt, P.G., had consented to .deliver a lecture, "The Future of New Zealand," at next meeting, and a general invitation to members of the district to attend was issued. Wellington District Lodge.—Bro. R. J Mathers, D.D.G.M., presided over a good attendance of past grands and executive officers of subordinate lodges. Accounts totalling £77 5s 4d were passed. Several members of subordinate lodges were advanced to First Degree by the District Degree Master (Bro A. E. Phillips, P.G.) and staff. Reports were received on hospital, medical, and unemployed members' dues funds, district membership progress, postponement of annual picnic from Anniversary Day, and arrangements for celebration of 100 th anniversary of the foundation of the Order in Australasia,

on Februuary 24. Dates and places for the term ritual competitions in March were fixed, and an invitation from Southern Cross Lodge No. 24 to attend the lecture by Bro. A. Leigh Hunt, P.G.L representative was accented Maraenui Lodge No. 124, Miramar. —Bro. A. Winter, N.G., presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. General business was conducted, and a member was authorised to receive First Degree at District Lodge. An invitation to accompany the Grand Warden on an official visit was accepted, and also District Lodge invitation to the celebration of the 100 th anniversary of the establishment of the order in Australasia. The social committee reported that arrangements had been made for holding a flannel dance after next meeting, which would therefore commence earlier. ISLAND BAY DRUIDS. The Island Bay Lodge U.A.O.D. held a well-attended meeting last week, Arch-Druid Bro. H. Stairmand presiding. The secretary presented the balance-sheet, which showed the lodge to be making steady progress. Two new members were elected and others were nominated for membership. The ritual work was of a high order, carried out by the following officers:— A.D., Bro. H. Stairmand; J.P.A., F. G. Barnes; V.A., L. C. Dunshea; 1.G., L. J. Cartmer; A.D.B.s, A. Maher, A. Clements; V.A.B.S, H. Willis, R. E. Ewing; M.C., J. F. Kuch. P.D.P. The duties of secretary were carried out by Bro. T. Mollison, P.S., and those of treasurer by Bro. J. Ciewes, P.D.P.
