STOCK HELD BACK

WAIPUKURAU SEASON

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

WAIPUKURAU, This Day.

A large decrease is shown in the number of sheep and cattle consigned from Waipukurau in January compared with January last, year. The totals for the four weeks ended on February 1 were 29,318 sheep and 120 cattle this year against 90,553 sheep and 589 cattle last year.

A leading stock agent explains that the position is due to a phenomenally rainy season. The cattle are required to keep down excessive growth and the sheep are late in fattening.

That not many breeding ewes are leaving central Hawke's Bay in anticipation of better prices is another factor.
