KILLED IN THE BUSH
TREE-FELLING ACCIDENT
''•" (By Telegraph—Press Association.) •' INVERCAEQILL, This Day. 1 Bertram Hughes, employed by Messrs. Hamilton and. Company, was fatally injured yesterday afternoon when engaged in tree-felling in the bush at Tuatapere. Hughes and a companion named Farquharson felled a tree which struck the butt of another lying on the ground. The impact threw the head of the fallen tree towards ■'• the' base of the trunk that had just .• been felled and Hughes was struck - and pinned to the ground. Farquharson '• was also struck but was able to call '' other bushmen working close at hand. 'I The tree was lifted from Hughes, who j-was alive, but unconscious. He died ■■■ before reaching the hospital. Farquharson sustained fractured ribs, a ■' slight injury to the lungs, and shock. Hughes was a married man aged 44, with two young sons. He was a popular resident of the district. In the war he was badly wounded at PasEchendaele.
