(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Your correspondent "L.E.C." has certainly touched on a subject of utmost importance to the majority of Wellington residents. Rentals in Wellington are undoubtedly out of all proportion and need adjustment. 'There is something wrong when a man in a good position and with unimpeachable references cannot secure a roof over his head unless he is prepared to pay from £2 to £2 10s per week. Even at this figure it is difficult to rent a decent modern home within miles of the city. The tenant is forced therefore to pay anything from 5s to 15s per week for tram fares for himself and family.

How the working man fares is beyond me, because I know that employees in executive positions in Wellington do their utmost to arrange for transfers to other centres owing to the high cost of living. The landlords have their worries also, but nothing can justify the charging of £2 per week for portion of a house containing three rooms, kitchenette, and bathroom. —I am, etc., W.G.
