UNIVERSITY TEAM

JAPANESE TOUR OPENS

TAKARAZUKA, January 26.

The New Zealand University Rugby football team, playing its first match in Japan at Koshien, defeated All Kansai by 31 points to 3. The New Zealand team was:—Bush; Watt, Lewis, Grant; Fookes, Gillies; Rae; Thomas, Laney, Wilson, Hudson, Eade, Chesterman, McVeagh, Stace.

In the first spelll the Kansai forwards dominated play, the half-time score being 8 to 3. Definite superiority was gained by the New Zealanders only in the last quarter of an hour, when the backs showed initiative and superior pace, despite facing a strong wind.

About 20,000 were present. At the conclusion of the game the local Governor presented a magnificent loving cup. The team is being most handsomely entertained and its time is being utilised very profitably in seeing characteristic features of Japanese life.
