FINE PERFORMANCES

MISS KENNEDY'S TREBLE

ADELAIDE, January 26.

The opening ceremony at the Adelaide Oval yesterday of the 1936 National Games was a remarkable and moving scene. In picturesque parade 500 athletes marched past before a crowd of 10,000. After the National Anthem had been sung, a two-minute silence was observed in memory of King George.

The crowd stood and cheered as 22 torch relay runners finished their long trek from Melbourne after covering the 480 miles in 52 hours. The Games flame was then ignited by the torch. from Melbourne. While the Olympic flag was unfurled the Olympic hymn was sung and 1000 pigeons, emblematical of the Dove of Peace, released. Results included:—

Women's 100 Metres' Championship. —C. Kennedy (New South Wales), 1; M. Turner <South Australia), 2; V. Carter (Victoria), 3. Won by a foot. Time, 13sec.

Men's 100 Metres.—N. Dempsey (Queensland), 1; R. Moffatt (Victoria), 2; W. Burfein (Queensland), 3. Won by two feet Time, 10 7-10 sec.

Women's 80 Metres Hurdles.—C. Kennedy, 1; D. Carter (Victoria), 2; J. Edwards (South Australia), 3. Time, 12 l-ssec.

Miss Clarice Kennedy completed a magnificent treble when she also won the javelin throw with 114 ft 9Jin. Men's 400 Metres.—H. Yates (Victoria), 1; T., Irwin (Victoria), 2; B. Bonfield (Queensland), 3. Time, 49sec. 1500 Metres.—G. Backhouse (Victoria), I; L. Brady (South "Australia), 2; W. Wightmann (Victoria), 3. Tim«, 3m in 59sec—an Australian record.

100 Metres Hurdles.—G. Maslen (Victoria), 1; A. Gordon (Queensland), 2; C. Brooks (South Australia), 3. Time, 16isee.

Other winners were:—High 'jump, D. Shetliffe (New South Wales), 6ft lin; broad jump, R. Graf (Victoria), 22ft 4 3-Bin; shot putt, F. Drew (Western Australia), 42ft. 1 7-Bin; 5000 metres walk, W. Marsten (Victoria), 22min 54-3-10 sec.

Duncan Gray (New South Wales) won the 1000 metres cycling championship.
