UNIVERSITY V. WELLINGTON

I Although University won the toss and had first use of the wicket in their game against Wellington, on No. 1 wicket at the Basin Reserve, they were unable to turn to account this initial advantage. They gave a disappointing display, and after occupying the creases for 159 minutes were dismissed lor a total of 143 runs. At the end of the day's play Wellington had made 211 runs for the loss of three wickets. The Wellington bowlers were on form, and all but three of the wickets were taken without assistance from the field. With five wickets for the cost of 39 runs Blundell was outstanding, and during his 19 overs—six of which were maidens—he maintained a deadly and consistent attack. Symes, too, was always a force to be contended with, and Meech did well with two wickets to his credit for 17 runs.

Weakened by the absence of Blandford, University opened their innings with Wilson and Simpson, and Wellington entrusted the attack to Blundell and Symes. Both batsmen were cautious, but after 20 minutes Simpson fell lbw to Symes, and after the addition of three runs Connell had his wickets shattered by Blundell. With only 12 runs on the board McMillan joined Wilson, and the development of a likely procession was temporarily checked. At this stage Wilson was very subdued, and as McMillan was not anxious to take any chances the rate of scoring was particularly slow. Blundell was treated with the utmost respect, but eventually he effected a separation by dismissing Wilson with a fine delivery. The students had now carried their total to 48, and the following wicket added a single only. Another possible rot, however, ceased with Edgley, who gave a really forceful and convincing performance. Attacking all the bowling with confidence, he reached the creditable total of 37 before being dismissed. His stay occupied 60 minutes, and included three 4's. Apart from Dean, the remaining wickets fell cheaply, and the innings closed at 4.24 p.m. Wellington's opening batsmen, Foley and Whyte immediately took charge of the bowling, and their batting-was in marked contrast to that provided by their opponents. Foley was particularly lively, and by means of delightful stroking behind the wicket reached 25 in 30 minutes. Whyte was also aggressive, and these two continued merrily to bring 70 runs up in 49 minutes. After making 46 runs Whyte was well held by Vietmeyer at mid-on. He hit eight 4's. Morgan signallec his appearance with a boundary, and 100 runs appeared on the board after 67 minutes of play. A change in the bowling proved effective when McMillan dismissed Foley with a beautiful ball in his second over. Altogether Foley hit four 4's in his total of 42 runs. Morgan by this time had well settled down, and although the runs mountec steadily the batsmen were quietened somewhat by Stevens. At 620 p.m. Wellington passee 'Varsity's total with eight wickets still in hand. Morgan and Thomas continued to bat brightly, and carried the score along to 197 before Edgley. at square-leg dismissed the former with an easy catch of Harpur's bowling. Morgan's total of 56 included five 4's, and was compiled by forceful stroking all round the wicket. Stevens and Harpur shared the burden of the attack, and Harpur performed creditably in taking two wickets for 39 runs. Details:— University. First Innings.
