FLOODLIGHTED MEETING

HELD AT PETONE

A good crowd assembled on the Petone Recreation Ground on Saturday evening to see the triangular contest between Wellington, Kiwi, and Wanganui. The meeting was a floodlighted one, acetone flares being set round the track, helped by one or two other lights. The experiment cannot altogether be called a success as it was most difficult to distinguish . the runners or cyclists .and so watch the progress of the various events. However, it always takes time to perfect any system of this nature. Wellington had a decisive lead over the other clubs, the points being as follows:— Wellington 62, Wanganui 36, Kiwi 30.

Good fields were entered and some close competition resulted. C. Robinson (Kiwi) won the 100 yards race in the good time of 10 l-ssec, and was first to the tape in the 220 yards A grade race, his time being 23sec. Roe was a prominent competitor in the cycle events. Miss Kench was in good form in the women's sprint events. Four cyclists came down in one of the races, but no one was badly hurt.

The Mayor of Petone (Mr. A. Scholefield) welcomed the visitors and said they had happy recollections of Wanganui's sportsmanship. The Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) stated that he was pleased to" see that Wanganui was there in strength. Those who organised sport and took part in it made a great contribution towards the well-being of. a country. •He hoped the meeting would be successful and others would follow it.

. The president of the Wellington Club (Mr. A. C. Kitto) and the president of the Kiwi Club (Mr. R. B- Reynolds) also spoke. Mr. Kitto said that all would sympathise with the secretary of the Petone Club (Mr. Len Price) in the loss of his daughter, and all present stood with bowed heads for a moment as a mark of respect. Cheers were given by the teams. The Lower Hutt Municipal Band was in attendance. .
